Traffic jams ease at Causeway By Sabrina Chan | Posted: 18 June 2011 1954 hrs SINGAPORE: It was a peaceful afternoon at the Woodlands Checkpoint and the Malaysia-Singapore Causeway on Saturday. The traffic situation was a far cry from the severe traffic jams that lasted over seven hours for some motorists last week. The jams were said to have been caused by the new biometric fingerprint system at the Malaysian checkpoints implemented three weeks ago. Many Singaporeans MediaCorp spoke to at the train and bus checkpoints gave a thumbs up to the new system for being faster and more efficient. 72-year-old Sanbiman Redwan, a frequent traveller to Malaysia, said: "Last week...very crowded, but today is okay The system is quite okay; it's very fast." Ms Lee Mei Ling, 20, and her sister Mei Fung, 22, said: "I think it's very efficient. It helps people travel faster....Better than the normal way, it helps people clear faster to the Malaysia side. It used to be worse last time. When we were younger it was a lot of jam....one hour, two hours, three hours, you have to wait, and very (crowded)...." One tour operator MediaCorp spoke to said bus traffic has also eased due to better crowd control on the Malaysian side, passengers travelling earlier to beat the congestion and fewer passengers travelling.
